Garissa Governor Ali Bunow Korane secured the endorsement of clan elders for his 2027 gubernatorial bid and officially joined the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) in a high-profile event at Mnara Primary School in Garissa. The gathering drew hundreds of supporters and political leaders, marking a significant political milestone for the county.
At the event, Governor Korane emphasized his commitment to uniting Garissa County under a banner of progressive leadership and inclusive governance. He stated:

“The clan endorsement is a common practice before one is accepted by the diverse communities in the county. This is already a springboard for my bid and the party. Together, we will succeed.”
Senior UDA officials, including Secretary General Hassan Omar, Deputy Party Leader Issa Timamy, and Party Chairperson Cecile Mbarire, welcomed Korane, praising his entry into the party for strengthening grassroots support in the region. Cecile Mbarire described his move as a turning point in consolidating progressive leadership in Northern Kenya, aligning with President William Ruto’s vision of a lasting national party.
Secretary General Hassan Omar urged residents to reject divisive politics and embrace development, dignity, and inclusivity, while Deputy Party Leader Issa Timamy highlighted UDA’s historic commitment to equitable programs and investments in Garissa. Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot underscored the party’s dedication to a people-centered political culture, where all citizens have an equal voice in shaping the nation’s future.
During a symbolic coronation ceremony, Korane was selected from among three other community candidates who had expressed interest in the governorship. Korane, who lost the previous general election to incumbent Governor Nathif Jama, is now making a renewed attempt for a second term.
Other leaders who participated in the event included Tana River Senator Danson Mungatana; MPs Nelson Koech (Belgut), Abdi Omar Shurie (Mbalambala), Amina Dika (Tana River Woman Representative), and Falhada Iman (EALA); Lamu Deputy Governor Dr. Mbarak Mohamed; Nakuru MCA Hassan Duale; and NEC member and Whip of the UDA MCAs Caucus.
