Qorahey Market Modernization Project

Governor Ali Bunow Korane spearheaded the modernisation of Qorahey Market, a key flagship project aimed at transforming the county’s trading infrastructure and improving the livelihoods of local traders. The project replaced the existing open-air market with an ultra-modern, well-structured facility to accommodate grocery and vegetable vendors who previously operated under challenging conditions.

The modernisation project included:

Construction of permanent, covered market stalls with proper roofing

Designated areas for different types of goods to reduce congestion

Improved sanitation and drainage facilities

Paved walkways and strategic lighting to enhance safety and accessibility

Allocation of space for administrative offices and market management

The project was funded through a conditional grant to the County Government of Garissa for the 2018/2019 financial year under the Kenya Urban Support Programme (KUSP), supported by the World Bank.

The Qorahey Market project is part of a wider effort to boost urban trade, reduce public health risks, and improve the trading environment for small and medium-sized enterprises. It also complements other county projects, including storm drainage systems, Cabral Walkway construction, and road resurfacing, ensuring that infrastructure upgrades are integrated and sustainable.
